Sanju Samson's Technique Called Into Question After New Zealand Series: "Again There Were Failures"
Sanju Samson failed to produce his best during India's T20I series against New Zealand, managing 107 runs in five games, and scoring less than 20 in four of them.
Sanju Samson failed to find his best form during India's recently-concluded T20I series against New Zealand. While India won the series 3-2, Samson managed only 107 runs in five matches. 67 of those runs came in the first game, where Samson played a crucial role in India's win. However, his form got progressively worse as the series went on, and he ended it with two single-digit scores. Veteran India cricketer Hanuma Vihari questioned Samson's technique in the final T20I, where he managed just 4 runs, as India lost the match.
In the fifth T20I, Samson played 10 balls but managed only 4, before falling to Kiwi quick Adam Milne.
"Samson stayed deep in the crease and let the ball swing. He should not have tried to play across the line," Vihari stated, speaking on his YouTube channel, as quoted by Sportskeeda.
"Sanju was inconsistent in this series. Again, there were some failures," he added.
Samson was kept on as India's first-choice opener during the series. He moved down to No. 3 for one game when Ishan Kishan was out. Despite Vaibhav Sooryavanshi impressing, Samson returned to the top once Kishan returned.
It appears that, in spite of patchy scores at times, Samson's firepower and match-winning brilliance has kept him ahead of Sooryavanshi in the pecking order for the time being.
Abhishek Sharma smashed a memorable hundred during the series, but even he did not have a good outing in the fifth T20I. Abhishek also fell to Adam Milne, managing just 1 run.
Hanuma Vihari explained where Abhishek went wrong.
"The ball was moving off the pitch initially. Abhishek was early into the shot. He was hasty and it hit the bottom of his bat. It was a rare failure for Abhishek," Vihari said.
"I think India losing the toss made a difference," he further stated.
Without Abhishek and Samson's fiery start, India had to rely on captain Shreyas Iyer and wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan for early impetus. Shreyas slammed 50 off 23, and Kishan 61 off 32, but India's final total of 191 was easily chased down by New Zealand.
