Mumbai Indians could be heading for a significant reshuffle ahead of the Indian Premier League's 2027 season, with two of their most prominent players attracting interest from rival franchises. Punjab Kings have reportedly explored a move for Hardik Pandya, while Lucknow Super Giants are looking at Suryakumar Yadav as a possible captaincy option.
The potential exits would mark a major change for a franchise that has built much of its success around an established core of Indian stars. Both players have been central to Mumbai's identity in recent years, but their futures at the five-time champions are now the subject of growing speculation.
India Today's sister channel SportsTak reported on Monday that Punjab Kings had made an approach for Hardik. The proposed deal could involve a straight swap with Arshdeep Singh, although Mumbai Indians are understood to want additional players included in the exchange.
Hardik's future has been a talking point since his return to Mumbai ahead of the 2024 season. The all-rounder had reportedly explored a move to Gujarat Titans earlier, but those discussions did not materialise after he sought the captaincy, according to reports.
The 32-year-old remains one of the most valuable Indian all-rounders in the IPL. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball, along with his experience of leading a team to a title, makes him an attractive proposition for any franchise looking to strengthen its leadership group.
HARDIK'S MI LEGACY
Hardik's association with Mumbai Indians goes back to 2015, when he emerged as a powerful middle-order batter and a useful seam-bowling option. He became an important part of the side that won four IPL titles between 2015 and 2020, establishing himself as one of the franchise's most successful all-rounders.
His performances for Mumbai also played a significant role in his rise in Indian cricket. Hardik developed into a regular across formats and eventually became one of India's key white-ball players.
He left Mumbai ahead of the 2022 season to join Gujarat Titans, taking up the captaincy of the new franchise. The move proved successful almost immediately. Hardik led Gujarat to the title in their debut season and then guided them to another final in 2023, strengthening his reputation as a leader in the IPL.
Mumbai brought him back ahead of the 2024 season and handed him the captaincy, replacing Rohit Sharma. However, his return did not produce the results the franchise had hoped for. The transition was accompanied by considerable scrutiny, while the team struggled to find consistency under his leadership.
Hardik's second stint has therefore been a difficult contrast to his first. A possible move to Punjab would bring an end to an association that helped shape his career, even as it would give him another opportunity to lead a franchise with ambitions of winning its maiden IPL title.
LSG LOOK AT SKY FOR CAPTAINCY
Hardik is not the only Mumbai Indians star whose future is being discussed. SportsTak has also reported that Lucknow Super Giants have shown interest in Suryakumar, with the franchise considering him for a leadership role after parting ways with Rishabh Pant following IPL 2026.
LSG have struggled to establish themselves as consistent contenders since entering the IPL in 2022. Their decision to invest heavily in Pant ahead of the 2025 season did not bring the desired results, and the franchise are now understood to be exploring other options as they plan for 2027.
Suryakumar's experience and standing in Indian cricket make him an appealing candidate. The batter has also led India in T20 internationals, giving him experience of managing a team at the highest level of the format.
His reported willingness to consider the offer could make the situation interesting for Mumbai. However, SportsTak's report suggests that the franchise are reluctant to let both Hardik and Suryakumar leave in the same transfer window.
The current understanding is that Mumbai would consider trading Suryakumar to Lucknow only if Hardik remains at the franchise. In other words, MI are not keen on losing both players as they look to reshape their squad ahead of the new season.
SURYAKUMAR'S RISE
Suryakumar joined Mumbai Indians in 2018 after beginning his IPL career with Kolkata Knight Riders. He quickly became one of the most dependable batters in the side, combining consistency with an attacking approach that allowed him to take on bowlers across different phases of an innings.
His ability to find gaps, play unconventional shots and maintain a high scoring rate made him a key part of Mumbai's batting line-up. He was instrumental in the franchise's title-winning campaigns in 2019 and 2020, and his performances for MI helped him earn an India debut in 2021.
Since then, Suryakumar has established himself as one of the most accomplished T20 batters in the world. His 360-degree range has made him particularly difficult to contain, while his experience at the international level has added to his value as a potential captaincy candidate.
A move to Lucknow would therefore be significant for both franchises. LSG would be looking at a proven Indian batter who could also take charge of the side, while Mumbai would potentially be losing another player who has been closely associated with their recent success.
Both situations are still developing, and neither transfer has been confirmed. But with Punjab exploring a move for Hardik and Lucknow interested in Suryakumar, Mumbai Indians could face a major decision over the future of two players who have helped define the franchise's recent era.
