3 reasons why CSK appointing Albie Morkel as assistant coach for IPL 2027 is the wrong move

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) signed former all-rounder Albie Morkel as their assistant coach for IPL 2027.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) signed former all-rounder Albie Morkel as their assistant coach for IPL 2027. The five-time champions have gone for a major revamp of their coaching staff ahead of the new season.

Albie Morkel began his IPL journey with CSK in the inaugural edition in 2008. He spent six seasons with the franchise until 2013, playing a major role in their back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011. In 78 games for the franchise, he picked up 76 wickets at an average of 27.08 and an economy rate of 8.10. He scored 827 runs in 59 innings at a strike rate of 144.83.

While Morkel's association with CSK dates back to 2008, the appointment raises questions about whether the franchise is prioritising past connections over the fresh tactical thinking required to rebuild a struggling team. CSK have missed the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, making this coaching overhaul particularly important.

That said, here are three reasons why bringing in Albie Morkel as an assistant coach may not be the right move.

#1 Limited experience as a coach at the franchise level

Albie Morkel's appointment as CSK assistant coach for IPL 2027 raises questions about how much experience he has gained in a coaching role in franchise cricket. The South African all-rounder was appointed head coach of Joburg Super Kings in July 2026, replacing Stephen Fleming, after previously serving as Fleming's assistant at Joburg Super Kings and Texas Super Kings.

The concern is that Morkel is still at an early stage of his franchise coaching career, having only recently moved into the top job at Joburg. CSK, meanwhile, are rebuilding their coaching staff after missing the IPL playoffs for three consecutive seasons. The franchise could have considered a coach with a longer record of leading a team, managing an entire campaign and making key tactical decisions under pressure.

While Morkel's experience as an assistant coach and former international all-rounder gives him useful knowledge, there is still a difference between supporting a head coach and being responsible for a team's overall strategy. Until he establishes a clear coaching contribution at the IPL level, there remains some uncertainty over how much he can add to Zaheer Khan's setup.

#2 Potential overlap with Mohit Sharma's role in managing bowlers

CSK have appointed Mohit Sharma as their bowling coach and Albie Morkel as an assistant coach for IPL 2027. Both bring considerable experience as former fast bowlers and all-rounders, respectively, but their responsibilities need to be clearly distinguished within Zaheer Khan's new coaching setup.

Morkel's experience as a seam-bowling all-rounder could make him useful in helping players balance their batting and bowling responsibilities, particularly those expected to contribute in both departments. However, Mohit will already be responsible for improving the bowling unit, including helping bowlers develop their variations, execute plans at the death and adapt to different match situations. If Morkel is also expected to work extensively with bowling all-rounders, CSK will need to establish how his inputs differ from those of the bowling coach.

The bigger concern is that CSK have not publicly established a distinct, specialised role for Albie Morkel that clearly complements Mohit's responsibilities. With a revamped coaching staff and several areas to address after three consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance, the franchise needs every appointment to serve a specific purpose. Unless Morkel is given a clearly defined area of responsibility, questions could arise over whether his appointment fills a genuine coaching need.

#3 CSK may be sacrificing continuity in their batting plans without a clear replacement structure

CSK have released long-serving batting coach Michael Hussey, while appointing Albie Morkel and Gareth Batty as assistant coaches. The franchise is considering looking at Batty's appointment in the role of a batting mentor, making batting responsibilities an important consideration.

The concern is that CSK are changing key personnel at the same time as they prepare for a crucial squad rebuild. Morkel's experience as a powerful lower-order batter and all-rounder could be useful, but it is not automatically equivalent to Hussey's experience working with the team's top-order batters and developing their batting plans. CSK must establish how Morkel will contribute alongside Batty rather than assume that bringing in former players will automatically maintain continuity.
