There were bizarre scenes in the WBBL on Wednesday night as a rare stumping rule denied the Hobart Hurricanes a short at victory over the Melbourne Renegades.
The match at Bellerive Oval went down to the wire as the Renegades tried to chase down Hobart’s total of 154.

In a tense finish, Hurricanes all-rounder Nicola Carey raced through the final over in a bid to avoid a penalty for slow over rates, but Hobart were allowed only two fielders outside of the ring circle for the final three balls as punishment.
Renegades batter Deandra Dottin then sliced the ball past the keeper down to the unprotected boundary rope for four.
The match appeared to be headed to a Super Over when the Renegades tied Hobart’s score of 154 as Dottin played and missed at the final ball of the over, with Hurricanes wicketkeeper Lizelle Lee up to the stumps to prevent a bye being run.
But as the teams prepared to continue playing, replays showed Lee’s gloves were fractionally in front of the stumps when she went to whip the bails off in an attempted stumping.
Under the laws of cricket, a no-ball is given when a wicketkeeper’s gloves are in front of the stumps to collect the ball, unless the batter has hit it.

The umpires deemed Lee had taken the ball in front of the stumps and the Hurricanes were docked a no-ball, handing the Renegades the extra run required to claim a four-wicket victory.
“Cricket is cruel isn’t it. It’s a game of centimetres,” the commentator said as Lee was consoled by her Hobart teammates.
“A crazy ending to a very fine game of WBBL cricket.”
The results gave the Renegades their first win of the season wile the Hurricanes are without a victory from three matches.
Australian captain Sophie Molineux had figures of 4/22 for the Renegades as she took her 100th WBBL wicket.
Carey, meanwhile, did all she could to drag the Hurricanes to victory, with the captain crunching 62 off 43 balls with the bat and taking 2/30 with the ball.
The Renegades were cruising at 1/101 in the 13th over when Carey’s dismissal of Courtney Webb sparked a collapse of 3/9, which led to the thrilling last-ball finish.
