3 reasons why Hardik Pandya's trade to Punjab Kings for IPL 2027 would be the wrong move

The Punjab Kings are closing in on the biggest trade of the IPL 2027 cycle, as per a Sportstar report. The exchange would take Hardik Pandya from the Mumbai Indians, with Arshdeep Singh and wicketkeeper-batter Vishnu Vinod going the other way.

The senior management of both franchises are understood to have all but agreed, with documentation due to be processed by IPL officials and an announcement possible before the November 17 retention deadline.

The backdrop explains the temptation. MI finished ninth in IPL 2026 with four wins from 14, and Hardik Pandya's own season never gathered momentum: 206 runs from 10 innings at 22.89 with no fifty, and four wickets at an economy of 11.43. PBKS finished fifth on 15 points, winning six of their first seven before losing six straight. Both sides want a reset.

Here are 3 reasons why Hardik Pandya's move to PBKS would be the wrong decision.

#1 He does not fix the phase that broke PBKS' season

PBKS' IPL 2026 unravelled with the ball. The Rajasthan Royals took 68 off Arshdeep's four overs in Mullanpur on April 28, the first defeat of the season, and the bowling never regained its early authority. Hardik Pandya would not have changed that. He sent down 22.4 overs across nine matches in 2026, took four wickets at 11.43. His one respectable split was the middle overs, at 8.42 an over. PBKS already stuff those overs with Marco Jansen and Azmatullah Omarzai. A seamer who cannot be handed four overs does not repair a death-bowling problem.

#2 PBKS would pay for the same hole twice

The case for moving Arshdeep Singh rests almost entirely on one poor season. His 14 wickets cost 10.20 an over, and he was one of only two bowlers to concede more than 500 runs. But his powerplay economy was 8.8 with seven wickets, and earlier in the year he was India's second-best seamer at the 2026 T20 World Cup, taking nine wickets at 8.46 as India won the title. Sportstar also reports that PBKS would then approach the Lucknow Super Giants for left-arm seamer Mohsin Khan, “fitness permitting”. So the trade costs a 27-year-old left-armer and Vinod, and then costs a second negotiation to replace him.

#3 The age curve, the role and a crowded room

Hardik Pandya will be 33 when IPL 2027 begins. Since rejoining MI in 2024, he has scored 537 runs in 31 innings at 20.65, pushing his strike rate to 150.40 as a finisher, while his bowling economy of 10.7 in that window is among the highest in the league. PBKS have a captain in Shreyas Iyer, paid Rs 26.75 crore and the man who took the side to the 2025 final. So Hardik arrives without the leadership that shaped his MI valuation. He also arrives without an obvious phase: the finishing sits with Shashank Singh and the middle overs with Jansen and Omarzai. The Impact Player rule further trims the premium on a two-in-one cricketer, because teams can already borrow a bowler.

The Punjab Kings' counter-argument is that Hardik Pandya's ball-striking settles tight chases, and that his India numbers since 2024 make the MI version the outlier. It is also a bet that a 33-year-old's best years are all but over while the fast bowler he replaces spends his peak somewhere else.
