Glenn Maxwell has terrorized bowlers with destructive strokeplay for over a decade. However, the Australian has also served as a prized asset with the ball in hand.
Operating as a shrewd off-spinner, Maxwell often provided vital breakthroughs. Across his 141 Indian Premier League (IPL) matches, he claimed 41 wickets while maintaining a tidy economy rate of 8.30. In international cricket, he bagged 136 dismissals across all formats for Australia, including 77 ODI wickets and 51 and eight in T20Is and Tests, respectively.
Here are five legendary batters sent packing by Maxwell's off-spin in the IPL.
#1 Rohit Sharma (MI vs. RCB, 2021)
Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma was running riot during their chase of 166 in Dubai. MI had surged to 57 without loss inside seven overs.
Maxwell was introduced to stem the flow. On the last delivery of the 10th over, he tossed up a tempting off-break. Rohit attempted a high-risk lofted shot over long-on. He mistimed it straight to Devdutt Padikkal on the boundary rope, falling for 43.
Eventually RCB won the encounter comfortably by 54 runs after a dramatic MI collapse.
#2 Suresh Raina (CSK vs. DD, 2018)
Suresh Raina stood as the undisputed run-machine of the tournament's first decade. During a high-scoring clash in Pune, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) enjoyed an explosive start. Maxwell struck on his second delivery of the contest. He fired in a quicker, flatter off-break on middle stump.
Raina shaped to cut off the back foot but played down the wrong line, losing his leg stump for one. Despite that, the Super Kings posted 211 and held on to win the match by 13 runs.
#3 Shikhar Dhawan (PBKS vs. RCB, 2024)
Shikhar Dhawan anchored Punjab Kings' innings in Bengaluru with a composed 45 off 37 balls. Maxwell varied his pace smartly to break the stand.
The all-rounder lured the left-handed opener with a tossed-up delivery outside off-stump. Dhawan stepped down the pitch to go downtown but miscalculated the flight. He sliced it straight into the hands of long-on, where Virat Kohli took a simple catch.
RCB successfully chased down 177 to beat Punjab by four wickets.
#4 David Warner (KXIP vs. SRH, 2017)
David Warner was in devastating touch in Mohali, racing to a 27-ball 51 featuring four boundaries and four maximums.
Maxwell brought himself on to test his countryman. He pushed through an arm ball that angled into the left-hander on a tight trajectory. Warner attempted an aggressive swipe across the line, completely missing the bounce to see his stumps shattered.
However, Maxwell's dismissal went in vain as the Sunrisers posted 207 and clinched a 26-run victory.
#5 Robin Uthappa (RCB vs. CSK, 2022)
CSK opener Robin Uthappa entered the contest in excellent touch during their run-chase of 174 in Pune. Maxwell was summoned early in the powerplay. He bowled a shorter, skiddy delivery that gripped off the surface. Uthappa attempted a cut off the back foot against the spin.
He failed to keep it down, offering an easy catch to backward point substitute Suyash Prabhudessai after scoring just one. Riding on Maxwell's spell, RCB successfully defended 173 to seal a 13-run win.
