Jamie Redknapp names the only 2 managers in the world who can save Manchester United if Carrick loses his job

Jamie Redknapp feels it is 'unfair' to be picking the next Manchester United manager while Michael Carrick is still in charge at Old Trafford. However, if the Englishman loses his job, Redknapp believes there are only two candidates who can save the Red Devils.

Speaking on Sky Sports after Manchester United lost 2-0 away from home to Chelsea, Redknapp picked Unai Emery and Eddie Howe as the ideal candidates to take over at United, if Carrick is dismissed.

He said:

“There are only, I think, two runners. Listen, Michael Carrick is still in the job so it’s unfair to be saying it. But if that’s the case, if this doesn’t improve, it’s inevitable that he’s going to lose his job. It can only be him [Emery] really and Eddie Howe.”

Redknapp thinks that even though Emery has full control over the project at Villa Park, the Spaniard could be tempted by the challenge of rebuilding a big club like Manchester United. He added:

“He’s got a project, he can do what he likes there, he’s running the club, whatever he says goes. But he might think, ‘This is the challenge for me.’

“Every manager has an ego. Everyone will believe that they can turn Manchester United around, they will genuinely believe that. With his abilities, he would probably be the only one that I would trust to be able to do it.”

Howe is the more available option out of the two managers though. He has been out of work since leaving Newcastle United in July, and as per the Guardian, appointing him would cost United around £3 million in compensation.

Jason Wilcox, the director of football at Manchester United, is said to favor him. Julian Nagelsmann, admired by recruitment chief Christopher Vivell, has also been mentioned in rumors.

Manchester United make latest decision on Michael Carrick’s future

Carrick is expected to be in the dugout for Tuesday’s Champions League game against Roma at Old Trafford, and his position is likely to be reviewed during the November international break.

Chief executive Omar Berrada and Wilcox had already met last Monday and decided to keep him for the game against Chelsea.

Carrick’s answer when TNT Sports asked whether he would still be in charge against Roma was a single word: “Yes.”

United are 17th in the Premier League with seven points, above the relegation zone only on goal difference, and have gone nine games without a win in all competitions, their worst run since September 1984.
