How to defeat Zhuo Bi, the Gatekeeper in Phantom Blade Zero

Soul faces off against Zhuo Bi, the Gatekeeper, in Phantom Blade Zero shortly after entering the Village of Lu region. The encounter can be quite annoying, as the boss uses a giant shield to guard his body and unleash various attacks with it. Once defeated, he drops the Bastion Phantom Edge, which can be used to block incoming damage during combat.

Zhuo Bi, the Gatekeeper, is the first boss you face while progressing through the story quests in the Village of Lu region of Phantom Blade Zero. Just follow the path near Old Man Gen's hideout. The boss spawns right across the stone bridge. The closest fast-travel point is the bell at Master Lan's hideout.

How to beat Zhuo Bi, the Gatekeeper in Phantom Blade Zero

Zhuo Bi, the Gatekeeper, primarily uses a giant shield to attack you. He has a slow moveset, which makes the whole boss encounter in Phantom Blade Zero manageable. The list below further discusses his abilities:

Shield slam: He slams the shield multiple times. The sequence ends with a blue-flash attack.

Spin attack: The boss also performs a spinning attack.

Shield slide: This is a black-flash move where the boss mounts the shield and slides toward you. He performs the attack three times, and it deals quite a bit of damage on impact.

Red-flash combos: Zhuo Bi unleashes multiple combos with his shield that end with a red-flash slam attack.

Dive attack: He launches into the air and crashes near you, unleashing a red-flash dive attack.

Shockwave: The boss lunges back and places the shield on the ground, sending a shockwave from the front.

Heavy smash: Zhuo Bi performs a heavy blue-flash attack.

How to counter

Most of Zhuo Bi’s moves are slow, and his combo finishers have a bit of a windup. You should be able to easily track them.

Hit the dodge button as soon as you spot a black or red flash. You can evade the majority of his attacks.

The initial slam attack in every combo can be parried. You will also want to block the shield slam and heavy smash to avoid taking damage.

Move to the side when you see the shockwave coming.

Do the same for all of his sliding attacks.

You must deplete his Sha-Chi and break his guard using a powerful single-hit Phantom Edge. The Dread Axe can get the job done.

You will also want to use the Shieldbreaker Talisman for this battle. The artifact enhances your damage against shields.
