Meet Uma Kashvi: 15-year-old Indian cricketer signed by DC, becomes youngest-ever WPL signing

Firstpost ·

Uma Kashvi's signing by Delhi Capitals has marked a historic moment in the Women's Premier League, with the Karnataka all-rounder becoming the youngest-ever women's cricketer to earn a WPL contract.

Uma Kashvi made history on Wednesday after becoming the youngest-ever women's cricketer to be signed in the Women's Premier League (WPL). The Karnataka all-rounder was roped in by the Delhi Capitals, a franchise known to invest in young talent, for INR 10 lakh.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) made waves after the Rajasthan Royals signed Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a 13-year-old cricketing prodigy from Bihar, in the IPL 2025 auction. He went on to make history in the 2025 and 2026 seasons, delivering breakthrough performances that paved his way into the Indian men's national cricket team.

The WPL also shook grounds after Kashvi went under the hammer and was promptly picked up by DC.

Who is Uma Kashvi?

Born on April 9, 2011, Kashvi Kandikuppa, also known as Uma Kashvi, is a promising all-rounder who bats right-handed and bowls off-spin. She took up cricket at the age of seven and a half at an academy near her home, initially focusing on building her fitness before progressing to the technical fundamentals of the game.

Kashvi struck an unbeaten 217 in a junior club-level inter-school tournament in Bengaluru, which rose her to prominence. She was just 12 years old at that time.

The young all-rounder has led Karnataka's U15 team and also led the Bengaluru Blasters in the Maharani Trophy. Kashvi also won the Women’s Under-19 T20 Trophy, reached the semi-finals of the Women’s Under-19 One-Day Trophy and shared the Karnataka Women’s League title.

Kashvi delivered a stellar performance in the women's U15 One Day Trophy, scoring 516 runs in six innings and striking three hundreds at a strike rate of 16 and an average of 172.

Kashvi expected to be key for DC

Kashvi is expected to have a key role in the Delhi Capitals' long-term plans in WPL. The franchise intends to break its runners-up streak, as it has come agonisingly close to the championship title but could not cross the finish line.

The upcoming WPL season will take place from January 14 to February 7, 2027, with Mumbai's Brabourne Stadium and Vadodara's Kotambi Stadium expected to host the matches.
