The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended the deadline for Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises to submit their player retention and release lists by two days. Notably, the board has moved the cutoff from November 15 to November 17, 2026, giving teams more time to finalise their squads.
The original deadline coincided with the fifth and final ODI between India and New Zealand at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. Franchises can also trade players before the deadline, with a few deals, including star wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant's trade, already completed ahead of the upcoming mini-auction.
BCCI Extends IPL 2027 Retention Deadline; Mini-Auction to Remain on December 16
In a communique sent to franchises on Monday, November 2, the BCCI confirmed the revised retention schedule. The player registration process also opened on the same day and will remain open until November 23, a week after the retention deadline.
Following the retention and release process, franchises will receive the registered player pool and have time to finalise their choices. Teams must submit their final shortlists by December 1, while the final auction register, including the player sets and their order, is expected to reach franchises on December 3.
Despite the change to the retention schedule, the mini-auction will take place as planned on December 16 in Goa. The event will bring the auction back to India after three consecutive overseas editions in Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
The auction date also coincides with the second ODI between India and Sri Lanka at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Reports have suggested that the match could be moved to December 17 to avoid a logistical overlap, but the BCCI has not indicated any change to the auction schedule.
Rishabh Pant-Kuldeep Yadav Swap Among Two Trades Ahead of IPL 2027 Auction
Franchises have already begun reshaping their squads through the trade window, which opened a month after the conclusion of the 2026 season and will remain open until a week before the auction.
Delhi Capitals have completed a high-profile swap with Lucknow Super Giants, bringing back their former captain Rishabh Pant. Left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav has moved to Lucknow as part of the deal.
Delhi have also completed a trade with Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Capitals sent fast bowler T Natarajan to the Hyderabad-based franchise and acquired leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari in return.
This is the final mini-auction under the current IPL player regulations cycle, with a mega-auction scheduled ahead of the 2028 season. Teams must, however, stay within the 25-player squad limit, including a maximum of eight overseas players.
IPL 2027 Season Dates Yet to Be Finalised as 2028 Mega-Auction Nears
The BCCI has not yet confirmed the dates for the 2027 IPL season. In 2024, while announcing the schedule windows for the following three editions, the board had set a period between March 14 and May 30.
However, following the BCCI's Annual General Meeting in September 2026, board secretary Devajit Saikia indicated that the tournament could begin towards the end of March. The 2027 edition will be the 20th season of the IPL.
The upcoming mega-auction ahead of the 2028 season will then begin the league's next media rights cycle. The BCCI has not yet released the tender for those rights.
The IPL entered the upper tier of global sports in 2022 when its media rights were sold for INR 48,390.5 crore, approximately US$6.2 billion. The next cycle is expected to be another major commercial milestone for the league.
