New Zealand amassed 259 for 7 in the fourth T20I against India on Friday, October 30, and with it went a record that had stood for three and a half months. Glenn Phillips made 107 off 49 balls, Michael Bracewell 65 off 25 deliveries, and the pair put on 115 runs in just 6.4 overs for the fifth wicket. It is the highest total India have conceded in a T20I, the highest T20I score at Auckland's Eden Park, and the Kiwis' best in the format.
The mark that fell was England's 257 for 3 at Southampton on July 11 this year. New Zealand were 246 for 6 after 19 overs, smashing the record in the final over of the innings. India arrived 3-0 up, having bowled first in all three wins. Shreyas Iyer, who called correctly at the toss for the fourth time in the series, said that the remaining games were a fresh start: “We're going to leave no stone unturned. It's important to be ruthless no matter what the results have been so far.”
Here are the top 5 highest totals India have conceded in T20I history.
1. New Zealand 259/7, Auckland, 30 October 2026
Mayank Yadav's pace gave India a way in, with Daryl Mitchell lbw in the fourth over after taking 20 off him in four balls, and Bevon Jacobs bounced out in the 12th. Glenn Phillips, however, remained unperturbed. He reached fifty off 31 balls, then made 40 from his next 11, with Nitish Kumar Reddy's 16th over going for 32. Bracewell's fifty came off 19 balls and included eight boundaries. Prince Yadav got him lbw for 65 off 25, but New Zealand had already taken seven sixes from 12 balls across the 16th and 17th overs. After Prince Yadav gave away just six runs off the 18th over, the Kiwis plundered 27 runs across the final two overs to break the record.
2. England 257/3, Southampton, 11 July 2026
England posted the first 250-plus total against India in the fifth T20I at Rose Bowl. Jos Buttler made 131 off 64 balls with 12 fours and eight sixes, Harry Brook 95 not out off 45, and the duo added 233 for the second wicket after Prasidh Krishna dismissed Phil Salt early. Brook was dropped on 3 in the sixth over, and the stand that followed decided the game. India replied with 201 for 8, Ishan Kishan making 56 off 35 and Tilak Varma 53, and lost by 56 runs as England completed a 4-0 series win and moved to the top of the rankings.
3. West Indies 252/4, Ranchi, 9 October 2026
India made 249 for 5 in Ranchi, their highest T20I total against the West Indies, and yet lost. Sanju Samson made 82 off 41 with Shreyas Iyer adding 40 off 18 and Tilak Varma 44 not out off 18. Mayank Yadav's 3 for 36 had West Indies reduced to 58 for 3 in the sixth over, then Shai Hope made 102 not out off 45 and Sherfane Rutherford 84 off 37, adding 120 in 54 balls, and the chase finished in 18.3 overs. It was the second-highest successful chase in T20I history and the highest against India.
4. West Indies 247/3, Hyderabad, 14 October 2026
The West Indies batted first in Hyderabad. Hope was unbeaten on 102 off 50 balls, Rutherford 49 not out off 26 and Shimron Hetmyer 33 off 12, and 247 for 3 was the second-highest first-innings total India had conceded, behind England's 257 for 3. Keemo Paul took 5 for 41 and India were bowled out for 223 in 19.3 overs despite Samson's 56 off 23 and Tilak Varma's 43 off 25, thus losing by 24 runs.
5. England 246/7, Mumbai, 2026 T20 World Cup semifinal
England's previous best against India came in the World Cup semifinal. After Sanju Samson's 89 off 42 balls took India to 253 for 7, Jacob Bethell's stunning 45-ball 108 kept the visitors in the hunt for a miraculous chase. They eventually finished on 246 for 7, and for four months it stood as the highest total any side had made against India. It is also the biggest score India have conceded in a T20 World Cup.
