BCCI underline plans to increase number of teams in WPL from 2028

Sportstar ·

Australia captain, Sophie Molineux, becomes the costliest buy at this WPL auction at Rs 1.10 crore for UP Warriorz.

Devajit Saikia, BCCI Secretary, has confirmed that there are plans to increase the number of teams in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) from five, as it has been since its inception in 2023.

“From next year, definitely we will have to do some brainstorming sessions to increase the number of teams as well as in other areas where we can improve. Not only the players but so many other areas we are having involvement in, right from the coaches, selectors, etc, and various stakeholders are involved here,” Saikia told the media during the WPL auction on Wednesday.

The WPL has grown massively in the four years, in terms of fandom and revenue, and the league is now dominating women’s cricket.

“WPL is one of the big leagues in franchise cricket after IPL. We have come a long way in four years, and ultimately we are now dominating women’s cricket. WPL has contributed to the success of women’s cricket in India,” Saikia added.

The auction this year had to be more restrained since most teams didn’t have much of a purse left; however, Sophie Molineux was the costliest buy this WPL auction at Rs 1.10 crore for the UP Warriorz.
