BREAKING: Former CSK star with consecutive title wins appointed assistant coach for IPL 2027

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) roped in their former star Albie Morkel as their new assistant coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season. The five-time champions have made a major overhaul to their support staff going into the new season.

CSK made the announcement on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. Albie Morkel was part of the team when they won back-to-back IPL titles in 2010 and 2011. The former South African all-rounder has built an extensive coaching career across domestic, franchise, and international cricket after retiring as a player.

He coached the Titans in the South African domestic setup after his retirement. Morkel also worked with the South African national team as a specialist coaching consultant/assistant. He also went on to serve as the assistant coach of the Namibia Cricket Team, helping guide the team to the Super 12 stage of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. The former all-rounder was appointed as the head coach of the SA20 franchise Joburg Super Kings (JSK) in mid-2026, taking over the role from Stephen Fleming, which could have played a role in his new appointment at CSK as well.

They have a restructured coaching set-up. Former India pacer Zaheer Khan was appointed the new head coach, along with Mohit Sharma as the bowling coach. They also roped in former England cricketer Gareth Batty as the assistant coach alongside Morkel.
