"I have a little sympathy for him” - Mohammad Kaif’s massive remark on India star after NZ vs IND 2026 T20Is

Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has come out in defense of veteran seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar following his expensive outing in the T20I series against New Zealand. He urged team management and selectors to resist knee-jerk reactions and afford him an extended run.

Kumar, returning to the national setup after a four-year hiatus, came under intense scrutiny for struggling to gain control in high-scoring encounters against the Black Caps. Kaif, however, insisted that judging an experienced campaigner based on an isolated series disregards the realities of modern T20 cricket and the inevitable nerves of an international comeback.

"If you ask me, I have a little sympathy for him because the man is returning after four years," Kaif said in a YouTube video uploaded to his channel. "After a very long time, he stepped out in Indian colors; he was nervous, I can understand... It wasn't just Bhuvneshwar Kumar who got hit, everyone is getting hit... My view is that you should observe Bhuvneshwar Kumar for one or two more series and then make a decision, then move forward."

Kumar’s pedigree across the shortest format remains substantive. According to Cricinfo data, the 36-year-old right-arm swing specialist entered the series with 90 wickets from 87 T20Is at an economy rate hovering around 6.96, alongside two five-wicket hauls.

Pointing to that track record, Kaif emphasized that proven performers warrant patience before being discarded.

"He has those numbers, his statistics show that he has match-winning ability... You can give him one or two more series on that logic. If he doesn't perform there, then close the chapter and move on with youngsters; that margin should be kept for Bhuvneshwar Kumar," Kaif argued.

The former middle-order batter cautioned against what he termed a club-cricket mentality of axing players after a single off-day. Drawing parallels with his formative years, Kaif contrasted reactionary coaching with the composure required at the elite level.

"You can't judge someone from one match, that he got hit so he is a useless player, bring someone else, he got hit so remove him and bring this one -- this used to happen in clubs!" Kaif said. "When I used to play in Allahabad, I saw that our coaches used to panic so quickly... 'Oh, he got hit, he's a useless player, bring him in!' That happens at the club level. At the international level, you have to move forward with more stability and composure."

"140-Plus Is an X-Factor" -- Mohammad Kaif backs genuine pace, citing Jayden Seales’ dismissal of Virat Kohli

Kaif has called on national selectors to prioritize express pace over traditional swing, highlighting how sheer velocity dramatically curtails a batter's reaction time.

The former Uttar Pradesh cricketer illustrated his point using West Indies pacer Jayden Seales, who removed Virat Kohli for a duck in the recent ODI series.

"A bowler who runs up and bowls with pace, 135-140... swing bowlers nowadays, because the ball doesn't swing that much anyway, at 130 they are getting hit, but 140 plus is a bit of an X-factor," Kaif explained. "Like I am taking the name of Jayden Seales, who dismissed Virat Kohli for zero in the last ODI -- why did Virat Kohli get out? Because they have that pace, and when the ball pitches and moves a bit with pace, that much is enough, reaction time becomes very less."

Kaif urged India to groom raw talents such as Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav to meet the demands of modern white-ball cricket.
