Team India opener Abhishek Sharma demolished New Zealand’s bowling attack with a breathtaking 35-ball century in the third T20I, powering the visitors to a commanding victory. Riding on his knock, the Men in Blue chased down 199 runs convincingly to win the series 3-0, with two matches still to play.
The dynamic left-hander dismantled the opposition with sheer power and precision, turning the contest into a one-sided masterclass from the outset. Abhishek signed off on a scorching 113 off just 38 deliveries, striking at a staggering 297.37 with nine boundaries and 11 sixes.
The blistering knock propelled him into elite company, yet the historic 12-ball half-century benchmark set by his mentor, Yuvraj Singh, remained out of reach.
Shortly after the blitz, Yuvraj took to X to playfully pull his prodigy’s leg, asking if he could ever match his own iconic record:
"You still can't get 50 off 12 can you Abhishek Sharma! Looks like two left-handers batting in their backyard!"
Reacting directly to the lighthearted jab during his post-match interaction, Abhishek responded with heartfelt admiration for the 2007 World T20 legend:
"I have said this before as well, I don't know what cricket he was playing back at that time. If any batter can go and score like that, it is not easy, 50 off 12 balls. We do not look to play for milestones, just look to enjoy ourselves in the middle."
The warm back-and-forth highlighted the deep bond between the Punjab southpaws. Notably, Abhishek has credited Yuvraj for his remarkable growth in international cricket.
Sharma and Suryavanshi blitz shatter records as India crush New Zealand in 3rd T20I
India took an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series, routing New Zealand by six wickets with 40 balls to spare in the third T20I in Wellington.
Batting first, the hosts posted a competitive 198 for three in their 20 overs, anchored by Daryl Mitchell's unbeaten 89 off 52 balls and Finn Allen's 25-ball 40. Arshdeep Singh led India's bowling effort with one for 33.
The chase, however, turned into an unprecedented onslaught led by openers Abhishek Sharma and 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Sharma demolished the attack with a 35-ball century, finishing on 113 off 38 deliveries. Suryavanshi provided lethal support, striking 45 off just 19 balls in a devastating 133-run opening stand.
India dismantled multiple world records during the blitz, racing to 118 for no loss in six overs to register the highest powerplay total in men's T20I history, while their team century in 30 balls marked the second-fastest on record. India overhauled the 199-run target in just 13.2 overs to wrap up the series.
