A surprise call-up for the tour and an even more surprising selection to partner Travis Head at the top of the order, Maddinson recorded two ducks, 8 and 48 across his four innings.
Josh Inglis and Cameron Green look likely to play in the series decider at Newlands though Green would be selected purely as a batter.
The Age’s Daniel Brettig reported both Inglis and Green are in the mix to bat in the top three.
Meanwhile Smith is yet to be confirmed fit after the neck issue which limited him during the second Test at Gqeberha.

Marnus Labuschagne’s hold on a place in the side is tenuous given his continued form struggles though if Smith cannot play he would be extremely unlikely to be omitted.
The third Test gets underway at 7pm AEDT on Tuesday.
