BREAKING: Former CSK batter ruled out of NZ vs IND 2026 1st ODI after collision with teammate
New Zealand have suffered a major setback ahead of their ODI series against India, with top-order batter Devon Conway ruled out of the opening clash after sustaining an injury during a freak training
New Zealand have suffered a major setback ahead of their ODI series against India, with top-order batter Devon Conway ruled out of the opening clash after sustaining an injury during a freak training collision with seamer Matt Henry.
The incident occurred during the Black Caps' primary fielding session on the eve of the match. While attempting to complete a relay catch along the boundary, Conway and Henry collided at high speed.
Medical staff attended immediately, and subsequent assessments confirmed that Conway will miss the first match. Henry, while shaken, escaped serious injury and remains under observation.
A New Zealand team spokesperson provided an update following the incident:
"Devon took a heavy knock during our fielding drills this afternoon. While preliminary scans have cleared him of any structural damage or bone fractures, the localized discomfort and impact injury rule him out of contention for the first ODI. We will monitor his rehabilitation daily before determining his availability for the remainder of the series."
Conway’s absence leaves a significant void at the top of New Zealand’s batting card. According to statistics from ESPNcricinfo, the left-hander has been one of New Zealand's most dependable white-ball performers, having amassed over 1,500 ODI runs at an average well exceeding 40, including five centuries. His composure against both quality pace and spin has often served as the anchor for the Black Caps' top order.
With Conway sidelined, the team management is expected to reshuffle the top three, potentially elevating Tim Seifert or promoting Glenn Phillips up the order to partner Will Young against a potent Indian bowling attack.
