Pakistani Human Rights Lawyer Imaan Mazari Sentenced To 10 Years In Prison In Case Linked To England Cricket Team Security
A Pakistani court on Thursday sentenced a prominent human rights lawyer and her husband to 10 years in prison each in a case involving a breach of security arrangements for England's cricket team during its 2024 visit, according to a court order.
A Pakistani court on Thursday sentenced prominent human rights lawyer Imaan Mazari and her husband Hadi Ali Chattha to 10 years in prison each in a case related to an alleged breach of security arrangements for England's cricket team during its 2024 tour of Pakistan. Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra of an anti-terrorism court delivered the verdict following a trial held inside Adiala Prison in the garrison city of Rawalpindi. The case stems from an incident in October 2024, when the couple allegedly removed road barriers in Islamabad along a route designated for the visiting England cricket team. Prosecutors accused them of obstructing police duties and inciting public unrest.
The couple were indicted on October 7 and pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Mazari disputed the prosecution's version of events, saying she was on her way to court to represent a client when police stopped them at a roadblock.
The couple are well known for representing journalists, political activists and human rights campaigners, including families seeking information about relatives allegedly detained by security agencies.
