One Run, Huge Controversy: Jharkhand Lodge Complaint With BCCI After Dramatic Exit

NDTV Sports ·

In its complaint, the Jharkhand Cricket Association has alleged that the match actually ended in a tie, but an error by the official scorer resulted in a different outcome.

A massive controversy took place during the Jharkhand vs Uttarakhand Women's Under-19 tournament match in Nagpur last Tuesday. The Jharkhand Cricket Association (JCA) has alleged that an official scorer's mistake cost them the match, which led to their exit from the tournament. The state cricket body has also lodged a formal complaint with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the matter. In the contest, Uttarakhand posted 134/6 batting first, while Jharkhand were bowled out for 133, according to the official scorecard. Jharkhand thus lost the match by one run and were knocked out of the tournament.

In its complaint, the JCA has alleged that the match actually ended in a tie, but an error by the official scorer resulted in a different outcome, reported The Indian Express. According to Jharkhand, one of their batters was run out on 29.4 overs while attempting a second run. While the scoreboard at the ground reflected the correct score, the official scorer recorded only the run-out and failed to add the first run completed by the batters.

Believing they needed two runs to win off the final ball, as shown on the ground scoreboard, Jharkhand managed a single and thought they had tied the match. To their surprise, they were instead declared losers by one run.

The report further stated that members of the Jharkhand team argued with the official scorer, but their efforts proved futile as the scorer remained firm on his decision.

A Jharkhand official also told the newspaper that the main scorer forgot to add the single taken before the run-out at 29.4 overs, which ultimately decided the fate of the team in both the match and the tournament. The official added that the rules bind the umpires to follow the main scorer's records rather than the ground scoreboard.
