Garena has not confirmed that Free Fire is returning to India, but both of its official Indian YouTube channels dropped the “MAX” branding on Monday, 26 October 2026, setting off another round of speculation.

The channels now appear as “Free Fire India Official” and “Free Fire India Esports.” The main channel has about 18.6 million subscribers and 2,900 videos; the esports channel has around 7.9 million subscribers and more than 1,100. Both carried MAX branding after Garena moved its Indian operations to Free Fire MAX when the original game was banned.

Also, the Free Fire India listing on Google Play Store was updated on 24 September 2026. Garena has not published a launch date or commented on the renaming. No official statement was available at the time of writing.

Will Free Fire be unbanned in India?

Nothing announced so far amounts to an unban. The original Free Fire app was blocked in February 2022 under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, while Free Fire MAX stayed on Indian app stores. Any return would likely come through the Free Fire India app announced in 2023, not the restoration of an old listing.

Two creators linked to Garena have added to the speculation. Assassin Army, also known as Nayan, said in an Instagram reel that they participated in a shoot for Free Fire India just a few days ago, and we are now hearing reports that the game could launch on October 28, 2026. Desi Gamers, or Amit Sharma, said creators travelled to Dubai for a Free Fire India shoot and that the game is set to launch soon on the Google Play Store and App Store. Neither statement is an official confirmation.

Free Fire ban timeline so far

February 2022: The government blocks Free Fire and 53 other apps over security concerns. Garena confirms the ban and shifts its Indian operations to Free Fire MAX.

31 August 2023: Garena announces Free Fire India, with local servers run by Yotta and MS Dhoni as brand ambassador, for release on 5 September.

5 September 2023: Garena postpones the launch by “a few more weeks,” citing localisation and gameplay work.

24 September 2026: The Free Fire India Play Store listing is reportedly updated.

26 October 2026: The channels revert to Free Fire India names, a day after FFMAI 2026 ends.

Garena’s Indian esports scene has kept running on Free Fire MAX, with three editions of the India Cup and four of the Asia Invitational since 2025. Team Apex Gaming, TSG Pros and Resurrection are set to represent India at the Free Fire World Series 2026 Global Finals. Until Garena posts a date, the app stores remain the only reliable signal.
