Aakash Chopra picks CSK retentions ahead of IPL 2027 auction; leaves out ₹14.20 crore signing
Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra urged the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to retain Dewald Brevis, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Akeal Hosein, Jamie Overton and Matt Henry ahead of the IPL 2027 auction.
Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra urged the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to retain Dewald Brevis, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Akeal Hosein, Jamie Overton and Matt Henry ahead of the IPL 2027 auction. However, Chopra, speaking on his YouTube channel, believes the franchise can let go of spin-bowling all-rounders Prashant Veer and Matt Short.
Overton had the best season of any CSK player. The England all-rounder took 14 wickets in 10 matches and made 136 runs at a strike rate of 158.14, bowling the middle overs and batting in the lower-middle order in MS Dhoni's absence.
Hosein was cheaper and arguably as influential. Bought at his ₹2 crore base price, the left-arm spinner took eight wickets in seven games at 8.02 an over, and Chennai won five of the seven matches he played. Gaikwad's numbers were poor, 337 runs at 123.44, but Chopra has treated his place as captain and opener as settled.
Veer was a massive ₹14.20 crore signing alongside Kartik Sharma for what auction reports described as a record sum for an uncapped player; he played six games, made 90 runs off 67 balls and bowled two overs.
Retention lists are due by November 15, 2026. The IPL 2027 mini-auction follows on December 16 in Goa, the last of the current cycle before a mega auction ahead of the 2028 season.
CSK's IPL 2026: six wins and another early exit
Five-time champions CSK finished eighth in the IPL 2026 standings with only six wins from 14 games. While it was a marginal improvement on the wooden spoon of 2025, it was a third straight season without qualifying for the playoffs.
Their talisman, MS Dhoni, did not play at all in IPL 2026, and specialist white-ball pacer Nathan Ellis also missed the season. Ayush Mhatre and Khaleel Ahmed were injured midway through the season, as the former champions had a few ups and several downs.
The franchise started the 2020s in style, winning their fourth and fifth titles in 2021 and 2023. However, they have failed to replicate their usual consistency over the past three years after Ruturaj Gaikwad took over as captain ahead of IPL 2024.
