MS Dhoni Reveals Special WhatsApp Message To Smriti Mandhana After Women's World Cup Win: "Please Wish Everyone"

NDTV Sports ·

MS Dhoni, India's men's Cricket World Cup 2011-winning captain, sent a special congratulatory message to Smriti Mandhana after the latter lifted the Women's Cricket World Cup in 2025.

The Indian women's cricket team made history in 2025 as they lifted the Women's Cricket World Cup for the very first time. Against the odds, after three back-to-back defeats, India went on to win the tournament. Indian women's cricket star and current team captain Smriti Mandhana has now revealed that, amidst the euphoria, she received a very special congratulatory message. It was from none other than MS Dhoni, the person who led India to the men's Cricket World Cup title in 2011.

Speaking at an event in Mumbai where both were present, Mandhana revealed that Dhoni had reached out to her after the World Cup triumph.

Knowing that Dhoni likes to keep a low-profile away from the cricket field, Mandhana expressed her joy at the fact that he took time out to deliver a personal message to the Women's World Cup-winning team.

"He (Dhoni) actually did send me a message after the World Cup win. I know he does not use his phone a lot. I was very happy that he used WhatsApp to congratulate all of us," said Mandhana.

"You saved the number?" asked presenter Harsha Bhogle to Mandhana.

Dhoni went on to explain why it was important to him to send a message to the Indian women's team.

"I did not know anyone else from the team. I was like, 'the message to go through'. We had just shot (a commercial) before that. I thought, 'Let me send a message to Smriti' and I mentioned, 'Please wish everyone who is part of the team'," Dhoni said, speaking at the same event.

"It's a big thing. It changes how Indian women's cricket moves forward. Not only that you've brought a big trophy for the country, but also the fact that these girls that day paved the way for future ladies on how they'd look at cricket and cricket as a profession," he added.

India beat South Africa by 52 runs in the Women's World Cup final. In the semi-final, they had beaten defending champions Australia by pulling off a then record chase in women's ODI cricket.
