India's Pace Battery Eyes Another Dominant Display Against New Zealand
India's inexperienced yet promising four-pronged pace attack will be looking to maintain its upper hand over New Zealand's batters and dictate proceedings to ensure that the visitors' lead is extended when the two sides clash in the second ODI on Saturday.
India's inexperienced yet promising four-pronged pace attack will look to maintain its dominance over New Zealand's batters and dictate proceedings when the two sides meet in the second ODI on Saturday. There were plenty of question marks over India's relatively untested bowling resources heading into the series, but Gurnoor Brar, Anshul Kamboj and Arshdeep Singh changed that perception with impressive performances in the opening ODI. The trio also hinted at a possible shift in approach under head coach Gautam Gambhir, who has often spoken about the importance of all-rounders in the side. While Eden Park featured shorter straight boundaries, the Hnry Stadium has shorter square boundaries, requiring the pacers to adjust their lengths accordingly.
Arshdeep and company used the bounce effectively in Auckland, but the dimensions of this venue could encourage them to bowl slightly fuller.
Although Arshdeep finished as India's leading wicket-taker in the opener, Kamboj stood out with his disciplined spell that included 46 dot balls.
While the other bowlers largely focused on hitting the deck hard, Kamboj was rewarded for consistently bowling Test-match lengths.
Arshdeep and Auqib Nabi opened the bowling at Eden Park, but given the movement generated by Kamboj, he could be considered for the new-ball role alongside the experienced left-arm pacer.
Among India's four pacers in the first ODI, Nabi was the only one to go wicketless.
He could make way for the experienced Mohammed Siraj should the team management opt for a change, although India have remained tight-lipped on the matter.
"I don't know, the team management will decide that," fielding coach Shubhadeep Ghosh said during the pre-match media interaction when asked if Siraj would feature.
On the batting front, Rohit Sharma will be expected to return among the runs after falling in the first over of the series opener. The veteran opener arrived in New Zealand after enjoying a productive home series against the West Indies.
Virat Kohli's fluency at Eden Park was another encouraging sign for India. The extra bounce hardly troubled him as he found the boundaries regularly and anchored the chase.
However, several Indian batters struggled against the short ball and will be looking to improve in that area.
Shreyas Iyer was tested by a barrage of bouncers before falling to a rising delivery, while Axar Patel also found the short-ball tactic difficult to negotiate.
New Zealand's batters, meanwhile, attempted to counter the extra bounce with aggressive pull shots but failed to execute consistently.
Captain Mitchell Santner admitted after the opening match that his side struggled to cope with the bounce extracted by India's fast bowlers.
With similar carry and bounce expected at this venue, pace bowling could once again play a decisive role.
Ahead of the match, New Zealand suffered a significant setback with Devon Conway being ruled out of the remainder of the series after sustaining a concussion during a fielding training session.
His absence compounds the challenges facing the hosts, who are already dealing with multiple injury concerns.
"Yeah, he's been massive for us, obviously. Crazy event at training, but we're bringing in Kelly, another great player. So it just gives other players an opportunity to stand up, as we have throughout," fast bowler Blair Tickner said on the eve of the match.
The other player involved in the collision, Matt Henry, has recovered and is available for selection.
